Breadfruit is one of the most popular “starches” served in tropical households around the world. As with many plants of the Caribbean, breadfruit was introduced from the South Pacific by Captain Bligh in the late 1700’s during his second voyage on the Providence. In the Spanish speaking areas of the Caribbean, it is called Arbor de Pan, The Tree of Bread. The leaves, which possess prominent green veins, resemble that of the Philodendron, reaching from 1-3 feet. The fruit of this tree is round, green in color, and has many bumps on the surface. One large breadfruit can weigh from five to ten pounds.

Move over Potatoes, Breadfruit is Boss…

One of the favorite ways in which Caribbean people cook this delicious starch is to “roast the breadfruit.” This is accomplished by placing the breadfruit, skin and all, without foil, directly into the hot coals. Breadfruit is also boiled and fried into breadfruit homefries, which are delightful. United States Customs allows you to bring back roasted breadfruit without any agricultural permit. Breadfruit tastes comparable to Irish potatoes. It has a distinct, nut-like flavor and more healthy fiber than potatoes. Breadfruit is high in carbohydrates, many minerals and is full of vitamins A, B and C. The leaves, sap and unripe fruits contain the medicinal components.

Breadfruit’s Many Health Benefits…

Medicinally speaking, breadfruit leaves contain high levels of camphorol and quercetin. These strong polyphenol compounds are powerful antioxidants, blocking key steps in the inflammatory and pain chemical cascades. West Indian people have applied the bruised leaves over painful areas for centuries with excellent results. Perhaps, the camphorol and quercetin are responsible for its reputation as a treatment for Tinea versicolor , a tenacious skin fungus which causes Ring Worm. The unripe fruit is laden with papayotin, an enzyme found also in papaya and good for the digestion. My personal instructor, the Medicine Bush Doctor, Jamba, has reported that Breadfruit is a Maroon medicine which is used topically on skin diseases, like warts or growths. The enzymes actually digest these growths with an escharotic action. The quercetin and other phenols can then kill the virus. Breadfruit sap has achieved a reputation as a cardiovascular tonic and will strengthen the heart, regulate the beat, as well as lower the blood pressure. The sap contains steroids known as cardenolides, (types of cardiac glycosides) like those found in Foxglove (Digitalis spp.). Breadfruit can easily be grown in Florida. The trees can be planted right in the ground in well drained soil. Overwatering will cause the roots to rot. They also do well in large pots, with an 18-20 diameter and 20 plus inches in height. A combination of soil, sand and perlite is perfect for proper drainage. Breadfruit will thrive in a bright, sunny southern exposure on a patio or porch , and may yield fruit in a season or two!

Diabetes and Hypoglycemia Natural Help

Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. The American Diabetes Association estimates that over 23.6 million children and adults in the United States—8% of the population—have diabetes, with numbers probably rising in the next few years !

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirms that diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness, kidney failure and nontraumatic lower-extremity amputations among adults. In this article we will review supplements and Herbal Botanical Medicine that can bring down blood sugar levels. CAUTION- IF YOU ARE TAKING MEDICATION FOR BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL, BE SURE TO DISCUSS THE USE OF ALL SUPPLEMENTS WITH YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid is also called ALA or simply Lipoic Acid. This supplement decreases free radicals that can lead to nerve damage- one of the negative effects caused by diabetes.  ALS also helps muscle cells to absorb glucose from the blood, which helps to increase energy. ALA may also help muscle cells take up blood sugar, and  has been  shown to decrease nerve pain, numbness, and burning. Typical dose: 600-800 mg per day.

Bilberry is a small relative to the Blueberry fruit. It is loaded with various anthocyanidins which act as antioxidants that protect small blood vessels from damage. This can help to minimize retinopathy and nerve pain common in diabetes. Dose: 100-300 milligrams per day.

bitter melon for diabetesBitter Melon is a vine that grows on all the fences around Century Village! It is also called Cerasee. They don’t call it “Bitter” for nothing. This plant can be made into a tea and allows glucose to be used efficiently by the cells, and may lower blood glucose levels. Dosage : 50 – 100 milliliters or 3 to 6 tablespoons per day.

Chromium is involved in the body’s metabolism of protein, fats and carbohydrates, and may help to enhance insulin’s action on the cells. People use chromium as part of weight loss protocols as well as to assist with blood sugar disregulations such as diabetes or hypoglycemia. Dose 200 micrograms per day.

Gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA, is a fatty acid found in many natural sources and is especially high in evening primrose oil. Supplementing with GLA may be helpful to prevent and reduce the nerve pain that can occur in individuals with diabetes. Dosage is between 250-550 milligrams per day.

Gymnema sylvestre is an herb from India- its name translates to ‘sugar destroyer’. Put some on your tongue to decrease cravings for sweets. It is helpful for blood sugar control by increasing enzyme activity for glucose utilization by cells, and increasing insulin production. A typical dose is 200-250 mg twice a day.

Magnesium is often low in people who have blood sugar disregulation. You can request that your level be tested by your physician. The most accurate test is to evalulate Red Blood Cell Magnesium Level. Forms of supplemental magnesium vary in terms of usefulness in the body. Magnesium Oxide is poorly absorbed, which Magnesium Glycinate if a better form. Dosage : 250 – 350 mg per day.

Prickly Pear Cactus Fruit is a beautiful pink colored fruit that grows on the Prickly Pair Cactus. These fruits are available for purchase at certain seasons in specialty grocery stores, and extracts and juice is available in health food stores. If eaten for blood sugar balance ½ cup per day of cooked fruit is recommended. If you pick your own be sure to watch out for the stickers on the plant! It is high in fiber and contains natural constituents that act in a similar way to insulin.

castor oil plantThe Castor bean is the seed of an herbaceous plant which is cultivated in the temperate climates, often as an ornamental. It grows from 3-10 feet tall. Its native cousins in Asia, Africa and the West Indies can grow to 30-40 ft high! The plant itself is quite poisonous; a child can die from ingesting a single castor bean. However, the light yellow oil pressed out of the bean is safe to use, since the toxic constituents remain in the seeds. The castor bean plant is also known as The Palma Christi, or Hand of Christ, due to the shape of the leaves and its healing properties. Castor oil is mentioned in the ancient Egyptian medical scrolls, the Codex Ebers. The Egyptians used castor oil as a laxative for cleansing the bowels and as a scalp rub to make hair grow and shine. The well known laxative effect is probably due to the active constituent ricinolein, which is a mild irritant to the large intestines. Many senior citizens probably remember their Grandparents reaching for the Castor oil at the first sign of illness.

Throughout history, castor oil has enjoyed popularity as a healing substance. Dr. Forest Clinton Jarvis in his 1958 best selling book Folk Medicine, describes many medicinal uses of castor oil. “Apply it to moles, warts and skin ulcers to remove or lessen the blemishes. Or, rub a small amount on the hair and eye lashes to make them more luxuriant”. Castor oil rubbed into sore joints and muscles right prior to heat application treatment reduces the pain and swelling of rheumatism.

Edgar Cayce, the famous American psychic who lived in the 1940’s, spoke often about the use of a castor oil pack. This is a gentle treatment suggested by Cayce for non-malignant ovarian fibroids and cysts, breast swellings and cysts, headaches, liver problems, constipation and other ailments involving elimination.

Materials :

Organic castor oil, Undyed wool flannel, a heating pad or hot water bottle, a plastic sheet, and some terry cloth towels.

Directions:

1)Soak the flannel in warmed castor oil and then place it onto the body over the area you wish to treat.

2) Cover the flannel with a piece of plastic. A small garbage bag works fine for this.

3) Place the heating pad over the plastic. Keep it on a warm setting. You may choose to use a hot water bottle instead of the heating pad.

4) Cover all of this with a towel to keep the surface you are laying on from becoming soiled and to keep in the warmth. Fasten the towel around you with a safety pin, or use an ace         bandage to secure everything in place.

5) Relax completely for one to two hours before removing the entire pack. The procedure is an excellent stress reducing modality and feels soothing. It can be used for all ages, except for placing it on the lower abdomen of a pregnant woman.

If you do the treatment over your abdomen, it may cause some mild cramping sensations over the right upper quadrant. This may be an indication that the Castor oil is stimulating the liver and Gallbladder. This is quite normal, so don’t be alarmed. Also, You may have a loosened bowel movement several hours after the pack. Again, this is quite a normal occurrence. AVOID IF PREGANT, unless the midwife or obstetrician directs you to do so/; as castor oil can begin and accelerate labor or cause premature miscarriage.

Cat’s Claw is a a powerful immune stimulater and aids digestion…

It is a broad spectrum antimicrobial that can eliminate fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites. The highlands of the Amazon rainforest in Peru is the home of the Ashanica Indians.  There, the indigenous healers have used Cat’s Claw (Uncaria tomentosa), which they call Una de Gato, for thousands of years, as an herbal medicine for many ailments, especially those which involve the digestive tract and the immune system.

The plant is named for the large hook-like thorns that come off the ends of a long vine which locals have stated resembles the Jaguar’s claw. The medicinal part is the root and the inner bark of the stem. In order to preserve the plant, the inner bark is usually used, while the roots are spared, to allow the next harvest to continue to grow.

In Africa, according to leading ethnobotantist Anthony Kweku Andoh, Ph.D., F.L.S. a parallel species, Uncaria africana, (the parrot’s beak), is used by the Ashanti clan people for similar medicinal purposes. In his fascinating book, The Parrot’s Beak & the Cat’s Claw: Hope for True Healing from the Rain Forests of Africa and South America, Dr. Andoh points out the similarity and what is believed to be the common origin of the Ashanica Indians of South American and the Ashanti people of Western Africa. These cultures are somehow linked by a common ancestral people known as the Olmecs, a pre-Mayan civilization which have also been identified as the predecessors of the Ashanti people in Africa. The Olmecs provide an anthropological link between Africa and South America. Indeed, according to Dr. Andoh, the similarity between the folkloric, cultural, ethnobotanical and ethnolinguistic relationship between these two peoples is uncanny, despite  the fact that the Atlantic divides the two cultures by 3,000 miles!

There are several different species of Cat’s Claw. Some are medicinal, while others are quite poisonous. Be sure to use a commercially prepared Cat’s Claw from a reputable herbal manufacturer!

Modern research has shown that the species known as cat’s claw (Uncaria tomentosa) contains the highly active ingredient isopteropodine, which has the most pronounced effect of activating immune system function.     A formidable array of scientific studies has been performed on Uncaria.  In 1985, the journal Planta Medica  reported on the alkaloids of Uncaria tomentosa and their ability to increase phagocytosis.  Phagocytosis is  the action  of the white blood cells as they engulf and destroy invading organisms, such as bacteria and viruses.  Additional compounds may help to explain the herb’s antioxidant properties, its ability to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and the anti-viral, and anti inflammatory properties also attributed to this herb. Some companies that sell Cat’s Claw in the health food industry, claim that only TOA Cat’s Claw should be used. However, this assertion is debatable.  Cats claw naturally contains a large array of components, including small amounts of  Tetra- oxindole alkaloids, or TOA , and pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids or POA. Although isolated TOA may be toxic in high amounts, scientific analysis shows that TOA helps support immune function. Cat’s Claw has traditionally been used with the TOA intact, with no report of adverse effects.

Health food  stores carry Cat’s Claw as a tea, tincture, extract and capsule. Due to Cat’s Claw’s adaptogenic properties, it can be taken regularly as a tonic and also can be used in higher doses for an acute or chronic illness. In general , use 100 mg/day in divided doses, or 30 drops 3 times per day.  Cat’s Claw can also be used externally as a poultice for wounds and skin irritations.  Use a well identified Cat’s Claw, Uncaria tomentosa. There are few reports of  side effects except for occasional  mild gastrointestinal disturbances.

OSTEOPOROSIS – The Natural Nurse and Dr. Z

OSTEOPOROSIS

Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeletal system, which is characterized by deterioration of bone tissue, along with a decrease in bone mass. It can strike anyone at any age, although it is most prevalent in Caucasian and Asian, small boned woman over 50 years old. Osteoporosis is recognized as a major public health issue. Over 10 million Americans are afflicted, with 34 million more who may already be exhibiting signs of low bone mass, which increases the risk of developing osteoporosis. Bone mass can be determined by a bone mineral density test (BMD), such as a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Low bone mass increases the risk of developing osteoporosis and fractures.  Osteoporosis can effect any bone in the body, although the most common sites are the wrist, spine and hips. It is credited with more than 1.5 million fractures in both the United States and Canada per year, causing a huge amount of personal suffering and loss of quality of life. (3) (4) This disease also has a high cost to society. The cumulative economic burden of care for fractures due to osteoporosis from 2008-2028 is estimated at $474 billion dollars in the United States alone. (5) 

 

The term, ‘osteoporosis’, describes the condition of the inside of the bones in people who have this disease, where large porous areas develop, weakening the bone structure. Throughout life, bone is a living tissue that maintains a balance through the bone building activity of osteoblasts, with the reabsorptive activity of osteoclasts. When factors such as advancing age cause a change in this balance towards reabsorption, bone mass decreases. After reaching a ‘fracture threshold’, bone that was normally able to withstand a minor stress, such as a fall or blow, becomes subject to break or fracture more easily. Osteoporosis is most often diagnosed in the senior years. However, the most important time to focus on building healthy bone is during the first 3 decades of life. Providing sufficient bone building nutrients, along with weight bearing exercise, may be the best protection against this disease. (6)   

There are several risk factors that increase the chance for an individual to develop osteoporosis: family history, female (six to eight times more likely than male) especially post-menopausal, due to decreased estrogen levels, advancing age, Caucasian , low calcium intake, smoking, alcohol consumption, a sedentary lifestyle , (7)  and soft drink consumption. (8)  (9)

Since many of these contributing factors are self regulated, health care providers can have a direct impact on this health issue by diligently educating clients. Risk of osteoporosis is also directly linked to the use of many prescription and OTC drugs: corticosteroids/steroids, thyroid hormones, anticonvulsants, aluminum containing antacids(ironically often recommended as a calcium source by mainstream physicians), loop diuretics,  gonadotropin-releasing hormones, and many others. (10)   Wherever possible, health care providers can instruct clients about natural therapies that may be equally effective for specific health conditions, but present a substantially lower risk for interfering with bone density.

 

Drug therapies for osteoporosis include bisphosphonates, such as alendronate and risedronate. A growing list of concerns is linked to the use of these drugs, including research that suggests a link between the use of these agents and esophageal cancer. (11)   A once per month tablet, ibandronate sodium, claims the advantage of greater convenience, but still has a host of possible adverse effects such as esophageal irritation, heartburn, and ulcers. In addition, it is not recommended that women with hypocalcemia take these drugs. Hormone replacement therapy was previously touted as a treatment, and may, in fact be quite useful for decreasing bone loss. However, this benefit decreases if hormone therapy is discontinued. In addition, many women refuse hormone therapy due to other known or perceived adverse effects. (12)  (13) Although pharmaceutical agents can be effective, there is an increased interest in non pharmacological prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. (14) 

 

Health care providers can be proactive on this front by supporting the improvement of nutritional status through diet and nutritional supplementation, along with suggestion for an increase in exercise training.

There are several natural interventions that promote increased bone health. These include sufficient consumption of bone supportive nutrients through healthy eating, regular exercise, and nutritional supplements including calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, boron, strontium, soy isoflavones and Vitamin K. Novel supplements such as  bone morphogenic proteins are also under investigation.   (15)  

 

 

 

 

Exercise

 

Exercise has an important impact on bone health. Several studies have increased awareness on how exercise can most constructively be used to prevent the development of osteoporosis. (16)  

 

Starting to exercise at a young age is best to achieve long term

positive effects, since maximum bone mass is usually achieved during the first third of the life cycle. However, exercise at any age can improve bone health. Weight bearing exercises, including weight training, hiking, climbing stairs and walking, and other exercises that force the bones to work against gravity, are effective at increasing bone mass. (17)   Researchers from the Bone & Joint Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation Center at the University of Michigan investigated a host of exercise studies from 1961 to 2009 to determine the kind of exercise that had the greatest impact on bone health and density. They concluded that three factors were most important in predicting the best exercise outcome: Strain magnitude (how much impact the exercise has on the bones and muscles), strain rate (how often maximum vs minimum strain is applied ) and strain frequency ( how often strain occurs in a given amount of time).  (18) 

 

A combination of these three factors determines how helpful a given exercise regime is in helping increase bone density. However, there is no consensus about the exact combination of these three factors that is most likely to maximize osteogenic activity. (19)  For most individuals, practicing weight bearing exercise three times per week for 12 to 20 minutes is sufficient to increase bone density.  Since each joint will respond to the strain load individually, its best to rotate exercise sites, and focus on each one for a limited time period. Continuing to exercise throughout life helps to reduce bone loss and the risk of falls. (20)  

 

Dietary Interventions

 

The best approach to getting sufficient nutrients to build and maintain strong bones is by consistently making healthy food choices. As we discuss each nutrient below, food sources will be included, along with suggestions for possible supplementation, which is secondary to whole food ingestion.

 

Calcium

 

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. It is well-recognized for its importance in the development of bones and teeth, and has many other functions as well. The ability of calcium supplements to “maintain good bone health and reduce the high risk of osteoporosis later in life.” is one of the few health label claims allowed by the United States FDA.   The best food sources of calcium, other than dairy, include whole grains, beans, almonds and other nuts, and dark green leafy vegetables, such as kale. (21) Milk and dairy products contain a substantial amount of calcium; however, it is interesting to note that individuals who avoid dairy due to lactose intolerance do not experience a corresponding increase in osteoporosis. (22) Calcium supplements have been shown in several studies to be effective at slowing bone loss in both peri-menopausal and post menopausal women. (23)   A Cochrane Database Review Article (2004), states that “calcium supplements ….. at 500 to 2000 mg per day, are the simplest and least expensive way to prevent bone loss.”  (24) A comprehensive literature review published in the British Medical Journal (2010) questioned the commonly held belief in the  benefits of using calcium supplements. In this meta-analysis the reviewers concluded that subjects who took a 500 mg/day calcium supplement (without Vitamin D), experienced an increased risk of myocardial infarction, when compared to those who did not take calcium supplements. These results will likely lead to further investigation of current recommendations. (25) 

 

To maintain bone health, 1000- 1500mg/day of calcium (including food sources and supplements) is recommended (varies with age, weight, sex, etc.) by the National Academy of Sciences. (26)  Sufficient  calcium intake  is important in preventing osteoporosis, because if thebody’s stores of calcium is low, calcium will be leached from bones, which can lead to decreased bone mass and the initiation or worsening of osteoporosis.   While diet is the ideal source for all nutrients, calcium supplementation is often recommended to ensure that adequate amounts of this important mineral are ingested daily. This can be confusing, due to the many forms of calcium on the market, the differences in dosage levels, absorption rates, delivery forms (ie tablets, vs. liquids), cost, etc.  Several studies have shown that calcium citrate is absorbed better than tricalcium phosphate, calcium lactate and calcium carbonate, (the kind of calcium in antacid tablets). (27)   Calcium citrate does not tend to cause gastric distress, and has a pleasant taste. One study surmised that calcium formate is better absorbed than either calcium citrate or calcium carbonate. (28) Microcrystalline hydroxyapetite (MH) is a form of calcium that was demonstrated to be more effective at slowing bone loss than calcium carbonate. (29)   MH was also shown to support bone density in a randomized double blind 2007 control study.   (30)   Since calcium is so intimately involved in an array of metabolic reactions, it is not surprising that there is a long list of possible interactions with pharmaceutical drugs. Examples follow: Calcium decreases the absorption of bisphosphonates, (31) levothyroxine (32)  , tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics (33) Thiazide can reduce calcium excretion, leading to hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis and renal failure. (34) Health care practitioners can assist customers to choose a calcium supplement that best meets their needs.

 

Magnesium

 

 

Magnesium is the second most common mineral in the body (after calcium). Magnesium is important for many metabolic processes, including building bone, formation of ATP, and promoting calcium absorption. Dietary sources of magnesium include nuts, whole grains, dark green vegetables, fish, meat and legumes. Magnesium is often deficient in the Standard American Diet, due to eating a diet low in this nutrient, and soil depletion due to commercial farming practices such as overcroping. (35)  Low levels of blood magnesium correlates with low bone density, (36) and several studies have supported the use of oral magnesium supplementation  to increase bone density. (37) (38) (39) (40)  Even a moderate magnesium deficiency has been documented to cause bone loss in rats. (41) Magnesium deficiency may impair the production of parathyroid hormone and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, which negatively effects bone mineralization. (42)  Supplementing with 250-400 mg a day of magnesium is usually recommended. Magnesium glycinate or gluconate are preferable to magnesium oxide, and are less likely to cause loose stools. Adverse effects of magnesium usually occur at higher dosages, and are most often associated with intravenous magnesium. These may include: diarrhea, drowsiness, loss of tendon reflexes, thirst, hypotension,  muscle weakness and respiratory and cardiac irregularities. (43)   Drug interactions include neuromuscular weakness and possible paralysis when combined  with aminoglycoside antibiotics, decreased absorption of biphosphates, tetracycline antibiotics and calcium channel blockers(take at different times). Conversely, many drugs cause hypomagnesemia, including aldesleukin, aminoglycosides and amphotericin-B(common). (44)   Magnesium supplementation helps to balance a number of health issues in addition to osteoporosis, such as insomnia, headaches, chronic constipation, restless leg syndrome, anxiety and irritability, and is often the first supplement we recommend in our clinical practice, after implementing a whole food based diet.

 

 

Vitamin D

 

 

Vitamin D is essential for the formation and maintenance of bone tissue, due to several complex mechanisms, including the regulation of calcium and phosphorous absorption. If Vitamin D levels are low Parathyroid hormone (PTH) increases, and triggers osteoclasts to release calcium into the blood via bone readsorbtion. If this process continues over time it weakens bone and leads to osteoporosis. In addition, vitamin D stimulates intestinal epithelial cells to synthesize calcium-binding proteins that support the absorption of calcium in the blood. (45) 

Vitamin D is called ‘the sunshine vitamin’ because the best source of vitamin D is from sensible sun exposure. Vitamin D is synthesized when sunlight hits the skin and transforms 7-dehydrocholesterol into vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). D3 is shuttled to the liver where it is converted to 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, which is then transformed into 1,25 dihydrocholecalciferol (calcitriol); 10 times more potent than Vitamin D3.  Magnesium and boron act as co-factors in this reaction. Food sources of vitamin D include fish and fish oils.  Vitamin D deficiency is now recognized as an epidemic in the United States (46), and is especially common in dark skinned persons, the elderly, people living in northern areas, and anyone who has limited sun exposure. Deficiency can create secondary hyperparathyroidism, leading to a loss of collagen matrix and minerals, which increases the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Poor bone remodeling due to higher osteoclast vs. osteoblast activity can be due to low levels of vitamin D, reduced synthesis of calcitriol in the kidneys or a lack of calcitrol receptors in target organs (47) Vitamin D is available as a supplement in several forms. Vitamin D 3 ( cholelcalciferol) Vitamin D 2( ergocalciferol) and Alfacalcidol are three common forms. Studies indicate that alfacaldidol  has been shown to prevent osteoporosis in women on high dose corticosteroids, (48)  as well as increasing muscle power and walking distance in the elderly. (49) A study which compared results using alfacalcidol with ergocalciferol (Vitamin D 2) in elderly women with vertebral fractures, discovered that alfacalcidol has a greater effect than D2 at stimulating calcium absorption by bones.  (50)  Vitamin D 3 is more effective than Vitamin D 2, and is a better supplement choice for most individuals. (51) An exception would be vegans, who prefer not to use any product that may have been animal sourced, since the starting material for D 3 is fish or lanolin. Mechanisms of action of Vitamin D’s role in building healthy bones includes increasing the number and activity of osteoblasts, (52) reducing the activity of osteoclasts, (53)  and normalizing the turnover of bone in osteoporosis. (54)  

Vitamin D appears to be most effective as a therapy for osteoporosis when combined with calcium. (55)     While 400 IU’s of oral vitamin D (cholecalciferol) is the current RDA, this level of supplementation appears to be insufficient to prevent fractures, while 700 to 800 IU/d appears to reduce the risk of hip and any nonvertebral fractures in both institutionalized and ambulatory elderly persons. (56)  Vitamin D is well tolerated at doses of 400 -800 IU. Current studies are moving towards increasing the RDA of Vitamin D, and many health practitioners are already recommending much higher doses. Scandinavian countries are considering ways to increase levels of Vitamin D through both supplementation and the use of UV lights. (57)Vitamin D has a low incidence of adverse effects, although intoxication can result if higher doses are used long term. Symptoms include weakness, nausea, vomiting and poor appetite. Toxicity may be seen when serum 25(OH)D concentration is consistently >200 ng/mL (>500 nmol/L) (58) More problematic are drugs which deplete Vitamin D. These include carbamazepine, (59)  cholestyramine and colestipol. (60)

 

 

 

Boron

 

 

 

Boron is ubiquitous throughout the human body with the highest concentrations found in the bones and dental enamel. Although there is currently no RDA, boron appears to be indispensable for healthy bone function, possibly via effects on reducing the excretion and absorption of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus,

( 61)  and by affecting signal transmissions across cell membranes by acting indirectly as a proton donor, which influences ion gradients that are involved with cell/cell communication. (62)   (63)   Boron may be involved in the synthesis of steroidal vitamins and hormones, such as Vitamin D, 17 beta-estradiol and testosterone  and  inhibits a range of microsomal enzymes which catabolize  these steroids, thus delivering a net up-regulatory effect, which could explain its bone building properties. (64) Boron clusters or carboranes have a high binding affinity for steroidal receptors (65)  and are being formulated into medications such as specific protease enzyme inhibitors. (66) Boron may be beneficial in the treatment of osteoporosis, especially in the case of vitamin D, magnesium, and potassium deficiency. (67)  One study found that boron supplementation as an isolated nutrient was not useful in terms of preventing bone loss.  (68)   Fruits, vegetables, soybeans and nuts can be rich sources of boron, but the level depends on the soil in which it is grown. A safe daily intake is estimated to be between 1 and 10 mg. Breast cancer patients are often cautioned not to use more than 3 mg a day due to references of boron’s ability to increase endogenous estrogen. (69) Sodium borate and boron chelated with glycinate, aspartate or citrate are the most common forms used in dietary  supplements. Toxic effects appear at intakes of about 100 mg. A fatal dose in adults is 15 to 20 g and in children 3 to 6 g. Repeated intakes of small amounts can cause accumulative toxicity, so pulse dosing is recommended, rather than continuous use.

 

 

 

 

 

Strontium

 

The mineral strontium is a powerful agent in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. Strontium is a naturally occurring mineral present in water and food. Trace amounts of strontium are found in the human skeleton, where it is adsorbed at the matrix crystal surface of bones. The Spinal Osteoporosis Therapeutic Intervention study is a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, which compared two groups of postmenopausal women who already had a diagnosis of osteoporosis. One group was given two grams daily of non-radioactive strontium ranelate , while another group received a  placebo. The strontium group illustrated a significant reduction (41%) in the relative risk of experiencing a new vertebral fracture. (70) Other promising studies showed reduced risks for non-vertebral fractures, including hip fractures following the use of strontium. (71)  In addition to reducing the risk of fracture, strontium ranelate increased bone mineral density throughout the study, peaking at 3 years, with augmented scores of 8.2% in the femoral neck and 9.8% in the hip. Japanese pharmaceutical researchers have trade named the strontium salt PROTELOS™ and are in phase two drug trials. The mechanism ofstrontium’s bone strengthening effect is believed to be decreased bone resorption and increased bone formation which increases bone mass, microarchitecture and strength. (72) 

In the US, strontium is available as a dietary supplement in the form of strontium citrate. Theoretically, this form may have similar action to strontium ranelate, which has been used in most studies. UC Davis is investigating the use of Sodium Citrate for the prevention of osteoporosis, but the results are not yet available. (73) Most practitioners recommend that strontium should be taken at bedtime, and not at the same time as calcium supplements, since they compete for adsorption into bone matrix.It is important to ensure calcium and vitamin D intakes are adequate when supplementing with strontium.  This is underscored by earlier research on animals suggesting that increasing the intake of strontium via diet may de-mineralize bone when calcium is deficient. (74)   In rats with chronic kidney failure, strontium has been shown to cause osteomalacia, a condition in which bone is softened due to lack of mineral content. (75)  For this reason, it is suggested that people on kidney dialysis should not use strontium supplements.

 

 

Isoflavones

 

 

Research supports the positive effects of soy isoflavones for reducing the risk of developing osteoporosis. (76)  Diets high in soy may decrease bone re-absorption in postmenopausal women. (77)  Although ipriflavone, a semi synthetic flavone comparable to genistein and diadzein found in soy foods, was ineffective in restoring bone density in rats, it modulated IGF-I(insulin growth factor I), (78) which is linked to bone mineral density and increased bone remodeling through several mechanisms. (79) IGF-I (Somatomedin C) is currently being measured by holistic health practitioners as one of the parameters to assess overall aging. Ipriflavone yielded positive results on bone mass in elderly women with osteoporosis in human trials at doses of 200 mg per day, (80)  and seems particularly beneficial when combined with calcium.  (81)   Moderate soy consumption (2-4 ounces per day) is likely a reasonable and prudent measure due to scientific validation of its positive effects, combined with a low incidence of adverse reactions.  Soy can cause allergic reactions in some individuals, and may inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis. (82)  Fermented soy is less likely to cause these adverse effects.

 

 

 

Vitamin K

 

Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin known for its effect in blood clotting, which it accomplishes by regulating the coagulation cascade via its ability to bind calcium ions (Ca2+), among other mechanisms. (83) There are three known vitamin K dependent proteins that have been isolated in bone: MGP (matrix Gla protein), protein S and osteocalcin. One of Vitamin K’s roles in helping to maintain healthy bone mass is linked to its importance in the formation of osteocalcin by osteoblasts. The synthesis of osteocalcin requires both Vitamin D and Vitamin K. There are two naturally occurring forms of vitamin K: Vitamin K 1 (phylloquinone), synthesized by plants, and Vitamin K 2 (Menaquinone-n) synthesized by bacteria. The ‘n’ signifies the number of 5 carbon chains that a specific kind of K 2 contains. Vitamin K 2 is available as both M-4 and M-7 as a dietary supplement. Research supports the use of both Vitamin K 1 and Vitamin K 2 in terms of benefits associated with osteoporosis. Vitamin K 1 supplementation has been shown to support a favorable bone biomarker profile. One study included vitamin K 1, along with Hop rho iso-alpha acids, berberine, vitamin D. The treatment group showed a significant decrease in  biomarkers that indicate bone turnover. (84) However, in a double blind study which followed patients who were given 500 mcg of Vitamin K 1 for three years their bone density scores were no better than the placebo group. (85)   Patients who undergo transplants have an increased risk for osteoporosis. A randomized, double blind, prospective longitudinal study investigated the effect of a dietary supplement which included vitamin K2 (180 mcg menakinon-7) on bone mass of 94 subjects who were followed for the first year after lung and heart transplantation. The outcome showed a favorable effect on bone mass density of the lumbar spine. (86)  Although Vitamin K 2 is currently gaining popularity as the preferred form to use in supplementation, Vitamin K 1 is more cost effective, and therefore may be the better choice for some patients.

Vitamin K is a fat soluble substance; however the body does not store a significant amount at any given time. The need to constantly replenish vitamin K through dietary intake is decreased due to the vitamin K cycle, which allows a small amount that is present to be used by the body several times. Vitamin K deficiency is rare, due to the reuse via the vitamin K cycle, and wide availability in the diet. Vitamin K is found in dark green vegetables such as kale, swiss chard, parsley and spinach, and to some extent in Olive and Soybean oils. Deficiency may occur in those taking anti-coagulant pharmaceutical drugs, or who have difficulty with fat metabolism. People who develop osteoporosis have been documented to have a low dietary intake of vitamin K containing foods, (87) as well as low  blood levels of Vitamin K. (88)   Health practitioners can emphasize the importance of eating high quality (preferably organic) green vegetables as part of the diet. If supplementation with vitamin K is recommended, common doses include the RDA amount of 65-80 mcg/day.

 

 

Bone Morphogenic Proteins

 

In the early 1960’s, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Marshall Urist discovered a family of proteins that stimulates osteoblasts and cartilage chondrocytes, and named these proteins Bone Morphogenetic Proteins – or BMPs. The impact of Dr. Urist’s contribution to medicine and healthcare was first realized in the 1990’s when commercial bone-protein preparations containing BMP’s and key growth factors were used by orthopedic surgeons for bone healing and spinal fusions. In 2002, the FDA approved select individual BMPs for use in surgical procedures as a more effective way to grow and heal bone. BMP’s account for the major proportion of the osteoinductive potential of bone extracts. (89)  BMP’s bind to one of the two types of serine and threonine kinase membrane receptors, and upon binding, initiate an intracellular signaling cascade which modulate the activity of transforming growth factor beta ligands. (90) This in turn leads to the expression of the transcription factorCbfa1 (Runx2), which results in the expression of several proteinscritical for bone formation, ultimately leading to regulation of target genes involved in bone remodeling. (91)  BMPs are thought to be key regulators of embryonic skeletogenesis (92), endochondral ossification (93), bone remodeling (94) (95), fracture repair (96), and bone regeneration. (97)  Over 20 BMPs family members have been identified.  (98) It was once thought that BMP’s  could only be applied locally by orthopedic surgeons  for a procedure known as “screw and glue” as they attempt to mend a fracture, but recent research in animals suggest that that systemically administered  BMP-6 restores the bone inductive capacity, micro-architecture, and quality of the skeleton in osteoporotic rats. Human trials are needed. (99) Somehealth practitioners are now recommending the use of oral BMP’s for osteroporosis and osteopenia at a dosage of 200-1000 mg/day with minimum adverse effects, except for occasional GI upset in some patients.

 

Health care practitioners can be instrumental in educating their patients to the fact that, with intelligent dietary and lifestyle choices, osteoporosis is largely preventable for most people.

Summer Skin Secrets

summer skin care secretsSummer is the perfect time to focus on natural healthy skin care. There is no lack of skin care products on the market, but even those that claim to be ‘natural’ often contain chemicals that act as sudsing agents, emulsifiers, preservatives and other artificial ingredients that can have detrimental effects on the skin. Summer is a great time to try some truly ‘all natural’ skin care items, which include fruits, vegetables and essential oils.
Avocado is a summer favorite. The shape of the Avocado is a clue to why the Aztecs called the avocado tree Ahuacuati, which means testicle tree. Avocados are a great source of the ‘good oils’ needed for the production of sex hormones. Avocados are a storehouse of nutrition, including vitamin E, vitamin C, folic acid, fiber, iron, potassium, lutein and beta-carotene. Avocado actually acts as a nutrient booster, which enhances the skin’s ability to absorb many of these nutrients, especially those that are fat-soluble, due to the high percentage of healthy essential fatty acids found in avocado. To use Avocado for skin care, just take a ripe avocado and smash it up with a fork until it has a creamy consistency. Put it directly on the face and leave it on for about ½ an hour, and then rinse off with lukewarm water. You will immediately feel its smoothing action.

citrus fruitCitrus fruits, including oranges, lemons and grapefruits have long been valued as part of a nutritious and tasty diet. Citrus fruits are famous for their Vitamin C content. However, citrus fruits are also a rich source of many vitamins, minerals, dietary polysaccharides and other phytochemicals that support healthy skin tone, such as potassium, folate, calcium, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, riboflavin and pantothenic acid. A variety of valuable phyto-chemicals are in found in citrus, such as monoterpenes, limonoids (triterpenes), flavanoids, carotenoids and hydroxycinnamic acid. Many of these nutrients act as powerful antioxidants, which help to diminish skin damage caused by free radicals, due to sun exposure and other stressful factors. Vitamin C in Citrus fruits is particularly important because Vitamin C is a necessary nutrient that the body needs to form collagen. Collagen is the ‘matrix’ which gives skin its tone and firmness. Wrinkles and ‘hanging skin’ are actually due to the weakening and breakdown of collagen that often occurs with advanced years. Make your own Citrus Skin Reviver- squeeze the juice of ½ grapefruit, one lemon and ½ orange into a glass. Add two times the amount of water to the juice combination, and one tablespoon of witch hazel. Pour the solution into a spray bottle (available at most drug stores). Spray your face a few times a day, and experience the natural exhilaration!

carrotsCarrots, along with other orange colored vegetables and fruits, such as butternut squash and pumpkins, contain a high amount of a family of nutrients known as carotenes. Beta carotene is one of the better known members of the carotene family, but actually, when they are used as a group, they provide superior protection against free radical damage than isolated beta carotene. Orange colored vegetables also contain flavonoids, which are active antioxidants that neutralize destructive free radicals. Carrots are particularly high in Vitamin A, with one carrot providing 270% of the daily requirement for Vitamin A. This is a plus for healthy skin. In fact, a Vitamin A derivative, Retinoic Acid, is a well known and scientifically studied skin care therapy, that helps to increase collagen and decrease wrinkles. To make a carrot facial, cut up 2-3 medium to large carrots and steam for 10 minutes or until soft. Mash with a fork. Add about 1 tsp of honey and mix well. Apply the carrot mixture to the face, and cover with a wash cloth soaked in luke warm water. Sit down and listen to music for 10-20 minutes. Rinse well and enjoy the refreshed skin glow! (The wash clothe may get ‘dyed’ orange, so don’t use your best linen! )

The skin-healing properties of green tea are linked to compounds called polyphenols, which help eliminate free radicals. The most abundant green tea polyphenol, EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate), has been studied for its ability to rejuvenate aging skin cells. Green tea has been shown to help reduce the effect of damaging UV radiation from the sun, which causes skin aging. Green tea also decreases inflammation and can help to improve skin elasticity. There are several ways you can take advantage of Green Tea. Get some Organic Green Tea Bags. Do NOT get de-caffeinated, since chemicals are often used in the decaffeination process. Put two Green Tea bags in a cup and cover with ¼ cup of boiling water. Allow to cool until it is warm to the touch. Then use the tea bags directly on the face, especially in any areas that tend to be puffy, such as lower eye lids. Allow the tea bags to stay in place for 20 min-1/2 hour. You can also use the liquid that the tea bags soaked in directly on the skin as a refreshing wash. Green tea is also available in powdered form, which is great for mixing into creams and lotions. Try green tea powder mixed into organic plain yogurt for a soothing and nutrition rich mask.

Eating healthy whole foods is the best way to be sure you are getting all the nutrients you may need. Unfortunately, our modern lifestyle often makes it difficult to eat correctly. In addition modern farming methods have depleted many nutrients from the soil. In addition to the ‘every day’ requirements of common vitamins , such as Vitamin B and Vitamin C, there are many other nutrients that the body requires in order to thrive at optimum levels.

 

 

1. Quercetin—Quercetin is a naturally occurring bioflavonoid (vitamin C helper) found in many species of plants, including the oak, onion, and blue-green algae. As a bioflavonoid, it has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and has been used by alternative practitioners for many years in the treatment of arthritis, autoimmune diseases, asthma, and cataracts. Quercetin blocks inflammation that can otherwise lead to leaky gut syndrome. Quercetin  represents one of nature’s most perfect medicines. By decreasing the rapid opening of mast cells and basophils—white blood cells which release histamines—quercetin stabilizes the gut and decreases permeability. Recommended dosage: 200 mg, 2-3 times daily between meals.

 

2. Glutamine—The amino acid glutamine is an important nutrient. An increase of L-glutamine in the diet has been shown to support intestinal and overall health.  Glutamine reduces unwanted movement of bacterial forms into general circulation, where they can often end up in the joints and instigate or aggravate arthritis.  Glutamine is used in the synthesis of an important nutrient known as N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (NAG), which is fundamental to the production of the protective mucus lining the digestive and respiratory tracts. Glutamine supplementation also enhances glutathione, an important antioxidant.

 

3. Glutathione—Glutathione is a tri-peptide, a small protein consisting of three amino acids, that functions as a principle antioxidant, scavenging free radicals and toxins that would otherwise damage and destroy cells. Further, glutathione regulates the activities of other antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C, and E. Vitamin C can also help increase glutathione levels. When the body is overrun by free radicals, supplies of glutathione become depleted. This condition, known as oxidative stress, negatively affects the musculoskeletal, nervous, immune, and endocrine systems. Glutathione exerts another protective and scavenging role in concert with the liver, the body’s primary organ of detoxification and internal cleansing. In the liver, glutathione combines with toxins, carcinogens, and waste products as a way of neutralizing them and then more effectively securing their elimination from the body. In addition, glutathione helps red blood cell membranes retain their structure, and must be present for white blood cells to perform their function of immune regulation.

 

4.  N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine—N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (NAG) is a sugar that is important to the formation of a type of mucus, glycocalyx, that protects the delicate intestinal tissues and acts as a first line of defense against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. These disease-causing microorganisms attempt to adhere to the cell surface and invade the intestinal walls. NAG also functions as a decoy sugar, attracting and binding dietary lectins, which then prevents them from attaching to the gut. People with a compromised gastrointestinal lining are more likely to experience the irritation caused by food allergies, dietary lectins, and bacterial, fungal, and viral organisms. Also, they are more susceptible to the damage due to aspirin, NSAIDs, and the contents of their own intestines, such as bile acid. Again, elevated levels of circulating immune complexes are the end result, which cause inflammation. NAG promotes the growth of friendly bacteria and is quickly digested by healthy intestinal bacteria.

 

5. Essential Fatty Acids—The kind of fats and oils that we take into our bodies are of paramount importance in determining the amount of inflammation we experience. A significant reduction in lab indicators of inflammation after using omega-3 fatty acids has been verified in clinical studies. These fatty acids are found in fish oils and certain vegetable oils, such as flaxseed and hemp seed oil. In addition to omega-3 fatty acids, borage seed oil and evening primrose oil, which contain large amounts of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 oil, cause clinical improvement.

 

6. FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides)– known popularly as “fast food for probiotics.” FOS is a natural sugar found in food sources such as Jerusalem artichokes, onions, barley, honey, asparagus, and garlic. It provides a growth medium for beneficial bacteria in the intestines.

 

Pain Killers- CAUTION !

Pain management is the number one reason that people use drugs, both prescription and over the counter. Although there are many drug therapies available for pain relief, they often have a myriad of adverse effects. For instance Vioxx and Celebrex can cause heart disease and have been linked to many deaths. Over the counter medications , such as Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) has been recalled due to contamination, and more recently, has been linked to dangerous liver toxicity. Here are the startling facts: in one year

Acetaminophen causes:
• 26,000 hospitalizations
• 100,000 calls to poison control centers
• 50,000 emergency room visits
• 450 deaths from liver failure

pain killer pillsAcetaminophen interferes with the liver’s ability to do its normal job of detoxification, and reduces the amount of the important antioxidant called glutathione. In addition acetaminophen has been linked to a severe skin reaction called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS). This condition can happen the first time the drug is ever used, or at any time, even if it has never occurred before after multiple uses. Aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen can also cause serious skin conditions, which, at times, can be fatal. This information was released by the FDA on August 1, 2013. The FDA will now require prescription drugs that contain Tylenol to be labeled with a warning about the possibility of this skin reaction and will ‘suggest’ that manufacturers of over the counter products do the same! Rather weak response to a potentially hazardous situation!

Don’t be lulled into believing that just because a drug is readily available over the counter, that it should be used in a flippant manor. Pharmaceutical drugs can be life saving when used appropriately, but often carry risks of illnesses far worse than what the drug was taken for in the first place.

A good option is to consider using natural remedies. That have a very long history of safety, and can really make a difference when dealing with painful conditions, especially if used along with an anti-inflammatory diet, high in vegetables and devoid of junk food, fried food and processed food.

Since pain is such a common human affliction, societies around the globe have experimented with many natural remedies to discover which ones were most useful for this purpose. The first line of defense against pain is to bring down overall inflammation in the body. Avoid ALL junk food, fried food and processed food. In addition , these herbs have been used around the world for thousands of years to decrease pain. Now, science is discovering the mechanism of action that makes them work.

Boswellia: Boswellia (Boswellia seratta) is a gum resin that has a long history of traditional use. It was honored as frankincense, the ‘sacred gift of the Magi’. The Times they Are A-Changing- Eating Healthy is Becoming the Mainstream Rage!

That is when I became aware of the negative effects of pesticides, processed foods, artificial flavoring and coloring, and began to choose ‘organic food’ whenever possible. Of course, I was called a ‘health nut’, which now sounds like a term of endearment! Over the last few years, our area here in South Florida, has become the home to MANY absolutely fantastic places to eat excellent, delicious healthy food!

Just the other night I was enjoying a fabulous meal that included SPAGETTI SQUASH ( never thought I would see that in a restaurant). I looked around and was astounded- here I sat at a very conventional hotel ( Wyndham Hotel on Military Trail in Boca Raton), eating incredible natural whole food, for a very reasonable price, but the real shocker was that EVERY TABLE was filled, and there was a line out the door!

That is when the concept of this article came to me! Here was the quantum change that I always had dreamed of. Of course, I have sought out healthy restaurants and eateries all these years, but the clientele was limited and many of these locations could not sustain business for very long.

I see we have now reached the 100th Monkey Effect! This is great news! It means that a quantum shift has occurred in the knowledge of how we can attain more years of life and more life to our years, by recognizing and enjoying the power of choosing to eat real, unprocessed, Non GMO, “unchemicalized” food. Beer? Boon or Bane

Let me start off by saying that I, personally, am not a beer drinker. In fact, I really don’t enjoy any kind of alcohol, not even wine. However, in this article I will share some information that many of you can think about when you decide to have a few social drinks during the upcoming holiday season. Science indicates that people who relax with moderate amounts of alcohol actually tend to enjoy a longer lifespan!

In a study published in 2010 (Holahan, C. Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, November 2010; vol 34.), researchers examined late-life alcohol use and mortality. They examined data that dated back 20 years, following 1,824 former or current drinkers aged 55 to 65. Factors considered included the number of drinks each individual may have on a certain day, their health status, and if they survived or passed away during the study period. The results surprised many people. While heavy drinkers (3 or more alcoholic drinks a day) and confirmed alcoholics had the highest death rate, the next group with increased mortality was those who did not drink alcohol at all! People who drank in moderation (1 to 2 alcoholic drinks/day) came out with the longest life and most health benefits! Therefore this study confirmed that moderate drinking offers an enhanced ” survival effect” among middle-aged and older adults. Another surprising fact was that the KIND of alcohol consumed did not effect this outcome.
With this in mind, I would like to share some information about the potential health benefits of beer… but remember- keep that to one or two per day.
The Journal of the Science and Food and Agriculture published a study about beer containing a significant amount of silica, which is important for bone mineral density.

Researchers from the Department of Food Science & Technology at the University of California, Davis studied commercial beer production to determine the relationship between beer production methods and the resulting silicon content, concluding that beer is a rich source of dietary silicon.

The study examined a wide range of beer styles for their silicon content and the impact of raw materials and the brewing process on the quantities of silicon that beer contains.

Silicon is present in beer in the soluble form of orthosilicic acid (OSA), which yields 50% bioavailability, making beer a major contributor to silicon intake in the Western diet. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), dietary silicon (Si), as soluble OSA, may be important for the growth and development of bone and connective tissue, and beer appears to be a major contributor to silicon intake. Based on these findings, some studies suggest moderate beer consumption may help fight osteoporosis, a disease of the skeletal system characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue.

The researchers examined a variety of raw material samples and found little change in the silicon content of barley during the malting process. The majority of the silicon in barley is in the husk, which is not affected greatly during malting. The malts with the higher silicon contents are pale colored which have less heat stress during the malting process. The darker products, such as the chocolate, roasted barley and black malt, all have substantial roasting and much lower silicon contents than the other malts for reasons that are not yet known. The hop samples analyzed showed surprisingly high levels of silicon with as much as four times more silicon than is found in malt.

“Beers containing high levels of malted barley and hops are richest in silicon,” concludes the study. While most of the silicon remains in the husk during brewing, significant quantities of silicon nonetheless survives into the beer.”
