Water Thoughts

In Honor of “Return of the Waters” Centennial of Saratoga’s Charter.

Water is truly the underlying basis for all life. I love the quote from Star Trek, when an alien being observes “ Humans are no more than ugly bags of mostly water!” Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but humans truly are bags of mostly water… Water makes up between 75% and 65% water, depending on age, size and weight of an individual. In addition to being the majority of the substance in every cell, Water helps to maintain many bodily functions. It enables swallowing and digesting foods, lubricates all mucous membranes and joints, maintains normal body temperature through perspiration, absorbs nutrients and eliminates wastes. Besides being the real basis of life in a physical sense, water is intimately linked to spiritual principles.

baptismal-font-869128_640Water is used in spiritual ritual, such as baptism in Christianity, bathing in the holy Ganges River in Hinduism, the Mikvah Cleansing Bath in Judaism, among many other examples. In modern times, Dr Glen Rein, the premier researcher on the energetic properties of water used his unique type of expertise to effect changes in the structure of water with Electro-Magnetic fields, thus changing its physical properties and allowing for its application to produce novel, enhanced effects in products for the skin-care industry, among other healing effects. Water was the basis of an entire chapter in the History of Medicine in the United States and Europe. A group of medical practitioners, referred to as The Physiomedicalists and The Hydropaths, were branches of medicine based on healing modalities referred to as ‘water cures.’ Many personalities were involved in this movement. Alva Curtis was the founder of the Physiomedicalist Philosophy. In 1835, Curtis opened the ‘Botanicomedical School and Infirmary’ at Columbus, Ohio, which used water cures among its healing procedures.

Vincent Priessnitz (1799-1852) was known as The Sponge Doctor. He was born a peasant in Silesia (now Czech Republic) and never attended medical school , but Priessnitz became one of the most famous healers of all time. He set in motion the forces which would lead to the establishment of hydrotherapy as a legitimate healing medical entity. Priessnitz observed that cattle and deer who had inflammation submersed the effected body parts in cold water, and it seemed to bring relief to their conditions. He then developed the cold water Priessnitz compress therapy by experimenting on his own farming injuries and treating local people in his village. Vincent Priessnitz coined the phrase “ Nothing is impossible to nature, diet, & cold water”. He was arrested several times for practising medicine, but always acquitted because “he was only using water”. Authorities decided to attack him as a sorcerer, and raid his place, looking for drugs, and in frustration, cutting up all his bewitched sponges! However, persecution didn’t embitter him, but only made him more famous. In 1826, he opened his own hydrotherapy institute, with a 45 patient residential capacity which filled instantly! This increased to many institutions with 1600 bed capacity all filled to the brim! Eventually, the Austrian government endorsed his practice and gave him the same status as a medical doctor, building new roads up to his establishments!

An important figure in the development of “ water medicine’ was Dr. Sebastian Kneipp (1824-1897). Kneipp was born very poor in Bavaria. He was very sickly from poor diet and developed tuberculosis. He stumbled upon a book by Hahn (a student of Priessnitz ) about the use of the water cure. After 6 months, he regain his health. Kneipp was ordained as a priest and treated his parishioners with the water cure, becoming known as the cholera vicar. People from all over the world came to be healed by his method of hydrotherapy. Kniepp believed that disease came from deranged blood; water healed by removing toxins restoring normal circulation, and strengthening the body.

Kniepp’s student, Bennedict Lust came to the United States in 1892 , and brought his brand of hydrotherapy to Americans. He also established the first health food store in America, and is known as The Father of American Naturopathy. Lust’s efforts were   supported by his wife Louisa Lust, N.D., who was already an esteemed physician before marrying Dr. Lust. She ran the Yungborn Sanitarium in Butler NJ, one of the premiere healing centers in the United States. The use of water as a respected healing modality continues today among Licensed Naturopathic Physicians (ND’s). They are highly training in the long history and evidence based healing effects linked to the use of water as a healing modality, such as colonic irrigation, enemas, contrast hydrotherapy and fever treatments, just to name of few. These time tested ‘drugless’ therapies bring great relief to millions, as they have throughout history. The waters of Saratoga Springs have a long history of applications, both for bathing and internal use, and as we move forward into modern times, they will hopefully once again be respected, protected and revered!

HEALTHY EATING COMES OF AGE!

The Times they Are A-Changing- Eating Healthy is Becoming the Mainstream Rage!

healthy restaurant food choiceI have been choosing healthy food since 1964. That is when I became aware of the negative effects of pesticides, processed foods, artificial flavoring and coloring, and began to choose ‘organic food’ whenever possible. Of course, I was called a ‘health nut’, which now sounds like a term of endearment! Over the last few years, our area here in South Florida, has become the home to MANY absolutely fantastic places to eat excellent, delicious healthy food!

Just the other night I was enjoying a fabulous meal that included SPAGETTI SQUASH ( never thought I would see that in a restaurant). I looked around and was astounded- here I sat at a very conventional hotel ( Wyndham Hotel on Military Trail in Boca Raton), eating incredible natural whole food, for a very reasonable price, but the real shocker was that EVERY TABLE was filled, and there was a line out the door!

That is when the concept of this article came to me! Here was the quantum change that I always had dreamed of. Of course, I have sought out healthy restaurants and eateries all these years, but the clientele was limited and many of these locations could not sustain business for very long.

I see we have now reached the 100th Monkey Effect! (The hundredth monkey effect is a supposed phenomenon in which a new behavior or idea is claimed to spread rapidly from one group to all related groups once a critical number of members of one group exhibit the new behavior or acknowledge the new idea. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundredth_monkey_effect )

This is great news! It means that a quantum shift has occurred in the knowledge of how we can attain more years of life and more life to our years, by recognizing and enjoying the power of choosing to eat real, unprocessed, Non GMO, “unchemicalized” food. I am going to include some information about a few of these excellent establishments that I often frequent.

I am so greatful for their existence and for their success, both on a personal and planetary level. The descriptions are taken from the restaurant’s websites. Visit them to view menus and for more information- better yet- visit the restaurants to enjoy the best meal of and for your life!

10 Top Supplement Tips

If you are taking a variety of nutritional dietary supplements, you may think that all supplements are 100 % safe, and the ‘more the merrier.’ Actually there are many issues that you should be aware of when choosing dietary supplements.
The BEST way to proceed it to seek supervision from a health care practitioner who is knowledgeable in natural remedies. They can offer you a blood test that analyses YOUR individual levels of important nutrients. Then you can make a science based decision about what you might actually be missing from your diet. You can then increase consumption of foods which contain the nutrients you need more of, and THEN consider using additional supplements appropriately. Life Extension Institute offers nutritional evaluation testing without a prescription from a health practitioner.

vitaminsHere are 10 Top Supplement Tips:

1. Supplement drug interactions: If you are taking any prescription drugs, its important to check with your physician before taking any supplements. For example, if you are taking coumadin, or any other blood thinner, and you ALSO take an herb such as ginger or ginkgo biloba, your blood may get too thin.

2. Too much calcium:Many people misinterpret the recommendation to take calcium. For example , if your doctor says you should get 1500 milligrams of calcium a day, that means that is the TOTAL amount you should take including foods- not the amount you need to take in a supplement.

3. Loaded with unhealthy fillers:
Many commercial brands of supplements actually contain fillers that are suspected of having harmful health effects. READ YOUR INGREDIENT LABEL- especially OTHER INGREDIENTS. If you see words such as Butylated Hydroxytoluene; FD&C Blue No. 2; FD&C Red No. 40 ; FD&C Yellow No. 6 ; Polysorbate 80; Sodium Benzoate; leave it on the shelf and choose another brand. You may need to visit your health food store to find supplements that do not contain these fillers.

4. Don’t take supplements 7 days a week:Natural health practitioners traditionally recommend that you get most of your essential nutrients from whole foods, rather than supplements. Allow your body a one day a week rest from supplements.

5. Unrealistic expectations:Many people run to purchase the ‘supplement of the day’ that is mentioned by TV “Gurus”. This often leads to unrealistic expectations. Supplements are meant to be part of an overall program of healthy eating, exercise and stress reduction, that can help with overall wellness over time. After the TV Guru’s endorsement, people expect to get immediate, overnight results simply from taking a pill, and will most likely be disappointed with the results.

6. Purchasing overpriced products through Multi Level Marketing Companies:
Products marketed through multi level marketing schemes are ALWAYS overpriced. You can regularly find similar products at ½ the cost (or less) at your local health food store. Look at the INGREDIENTS in the supplement fact box on the Multi Level product, and match it up to a similar formula.

7. Inferior FORM of specific nutrients:Become an educated health consumer and research the best form of each nutrient. For example, vitamin E comes in many forms. “dl tocopherol” is a chemical, while “mixed tocopherols” are naturally occurring as would be found in food.

8. Too much of a good thing -Megadosing on supplements:When it comes to supplements, just because a small amount may be good for you, taking more is not always better, and can be dangerous. Examples include Vitamin A in high amounts can cause birth defects if used during pregnancy, and Vitamin B 6 , if taken in doses higher than 250 mg per day, can cause neurological problems.

9. Relying on Supplements instead of healthy food.
The word ‘supplement’ means that these substances can help to ‘fill in’ if sufficient nutrition is not provided by the diet. However, pills cannot replace healthy food.

10. Taking supplements to ‘Loose Weight’ Although certain substances such as Green Tea and Glucomannon can help the body metabolize fat, there is still only ONE WAY to loose weight: take in less calories than you burn: that means healthy eating and exercise!

Aging Gracefully with The Natural Nurse

I have been a health practitioner for over 40 years, with a focus on natural health. The usefulness of particular practices becomes more apparent the longer we have to evaluate the outcome. The term ‘Anti-Aging’ is not regulated by any governing body, and can be widely used as a marketing ploy with no proof to back it up. To understand the attraction that ‘Anti-Aging’ has in the marketplace, just watch the sales figures soar as soon as this term is thrown on the label. There is an ongoing plethora of products, dietary supplements and skin care applicants that are heavily promoted for their youth enhancing and anti-aging properties, but only a very short list includes scientific evidence. I have seen thousands of consumers jump on board with the latest ‘Anti- aging ‘ craze, only to do the same again ( with no effect) when the next product comes along. No matter how much money you spend, and how many pills and potions you pop, none of this will likely yield any kind of measureable response, without the basis of healthy eating, exercise and a stress reduction regime. Both science and practical life observations support several activities that actually DO lead to increased health and longevity. A Harvard Magazine article (https://harvardmagazine.com/2005/09/the-aging-enigma.html ), included information on the science behind anti-aging. Sirtuin activating compounds, or STACs- are cellular ‘signaling’ compounds that help cells to defend themselves from the effects of oxidative damage (similar to rusting), which causes aging. A few things have been found to increase Sirtuin: caloric restriction, moderate exercise, resveratrol ( found in wine and other compounds). Other studies have shown that stress reduction, eating unprocessed vegetables and fruits, ALONG with other supplements, such as alph-lipoic acid, and carnosine , also offset the pro-aging effects of oxidative damage. Excellent foods to include in your youth enhancing diet are pomegranate, kale, swiss chard, brussel sprouts and most other fruits and vegetables, and fatty fish like wild salmon. Lifestyle choices that have the opposite effect, and lead to increased oxidative damage include consuming Trans-fats, all fried, processed, refined , and other ‘junk food’, high levels of stress , and lack of exercise and a sedentary lifestyle.
The best day to start to focus on healthy aging practices is when you are ready to commit to a healthy lifestyle. Of course, in hind sight, you can admonish yourself for not starting sooner, but one of the main tenets of recognizing the healing power of mind, body and spirit is to be kind to yourself for past mistakes, and to learn to use uplifting ‘self talk.’ It is certainly true that ‘the sooner the better’ is the best policy. For example, babies whose mothers consumed high amount of DHA while they were pregnant tend to have higher IQ’s and are more capable learners. (Oken E, et al. Associations of maternal fish intake during pregnancy and breastfeeding duration with attainment of developmental milestones in early childhood: a study from the Danish National Birth Cohort. Am J Clin Nutr 2008 September;88(3):789-96) Woman who exercise and get enough dietary calcium and Vitamin D while young tend to suffer less from osteoporosis. That’s because bone growth naturally slows down after 50, so the more dense bone that is already formed during youth, the better. However, that does not mean to ‘give up’. You can always be in better shape tomorrow by making different choices today!
Although, the younger healthy lifestyle choices are initiated the better, there is no time like the present- it is never too late. You can always be in better shape tomorrow by making different choices today!
As The Natural Nurse®, my personal focus has been to write books, host radio and television shows, and teach at conventional medical schools, to elevate the knowledge about the evidence behind the safety and efficacy of natural therapies. I also follow this lifestyle on a daily level, and have since 1964. I use organic food, eat a small amount, exercise daily, take herbs and supplements and practice stress reduction techniques. I also have the benefit of long lived, healthy relatives which indicate a positive genetic influence.
